Preparing for a trip to Germany

In preparation for the upcoming trip to Dinkelsbühl, the Swedish students have done some research into the German – Swedish history, famous Germans, and the two countries’ current relationship.

The Hanseatic league

The Hanseatic league was a trading agreement between Sweden and Germany in 1100 – 1600. The Hanseatic league was founded because they didn’t want benefit from trading with each other. At its peak, almost a hundred cities were a part of it. There were three groups in the beginning of the Hanseatic league. Its importance faded in the middle of 1600 when the world trade took other ways. The old German word ‘’Hansa’’ means group, therefore the name.

German loanwords in the Swedish language

The Swedish language has a long history of borrowing words from other languages. The source languages have usually been a large economic or cultural importance for Sweden.

The German language has always had a huge impact on the Swedish language. But the biggest period when Germany had an impact on Sweden was during the Middle ages (approximately 500 years). This was Germany’s strongest period in Sweden. Words were to be borrowed from German until the early 1900’s.

German words are now a part of the Swedish language and are used daily. Example: German word – Swedish word – English translation

arbeit – arbete – work

bliva – bli – to become

möglich – möjlig – possible

The Swedish word order changed because of German as well. Many suffixes and prefixes were also borrowed.

Astrid Lindgren

Astrid Lindgren was a Swedish author. She made a lot of books for children. She was born in 1907 in Småland, in Southern Sweden. We all know that she is famous in Sweden, but did you know that she is just as famous in Germany?

In Germany, there are 200 schools named after her. And especially the book “Barnen i Bullerbyn” has made a big impact on Germany and has given them a picture of what Sweden looks like. They have a romantic, child village look to Sweden just like they got in “Barnen i Bullerby” according to svensktyska.se

Swedish Football Players in Germany

Emil Forsberg s a pro football player that plays in FC Leipzig. Born in Sweden in 1991 and plays for the Swedish national team.

Alexander Isak is 18 years old. He plays in Dortmund. He is a young Swedish pro football player. He was born September 21 in 1999.

Albin Ekdal is a professional football player from Sweden. Ekdal has played for teams like Juventus, Bologna, Cagliari and Hamburg. Ekdal is a central midfielder and has in total scored 11 career goals.

Famous German People

Albert Einstein was born on March 14, 1879, in Ulm, the Kingdom of Württemberg, the German Empire. Famous as Father of Modern Physics and the theory of relativity. He died at the age of 76,  on the of 18 April 1955.

Michael Schumacher is an F1 racer who was born in 1969 on the 3rd of February. He has been interested in racing since he was very young.

J. Cole, is a rapper and record producer. He was born on January 28 at the year of 1985 in Germany, Frankfurt. But he is up brought in the USA.

German Cars

Mercedes Benz is known for luxury vehicles, buses, coaches, and trucks. The headquarters is in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg.

Opel is a German automobile manufacturer. Opel’s headquarters are based in Rüsselsheim, Hesse, Germany. Opel traces its roots to a sewing machine manufacturer founded by Adam Opel in 1862. The company began manufacturing bicycles in 1886 and produced its first automobile in 1899.

BMW- Bayerische Motoren Werke AG usually known as BMW, is a German luxury vehicle, motorcycle, and engine manufacturing company founded in 1916. It is one of the best-selling luxury automakers in the world.

Volkswagen shortened to VW, is a German automaker founded on May 28, 1937. Volkswagen is German for “people’s car”, and the company’s current international advertising slogan is just “Volkswagen”. American English pronunciation is approximate “volks wagon”.

Audi is a German automobile manufacturer that designs luxury vehicles. Audi is a member of the Volkswagen Group and has its roots in Ingolstadt, Bavaria, Germany.

Porsche is a German automobile manufacturer specializing in high-performance sports cars, SUVs and sedans.
